Welcome

Laminate flooring is one of the most popular choices for homeowners today, and for good reason. It offers the look of hardwood or stone at a fraction of the cost, holds up well in active households, and is significantly easier to install and maintain than natural materials. Here is everything you need to know before you buy.

Understanding Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic product. The core is typically high-density fiberboard (HDF) for stability. On top of that is a decorative photographic layer that replicates the look of wood, stone, or tile. The top layer is a wear-resistant clear coating that protects against scratches, stains, and fading. Quality varies significantly between products, and the differences show over time.

AC Ratings: The Most Important Number

The Abrasion Criteria (AC) rating tells you how much traffic a laminate floor can withstand. AC1 and AC2 are rated for light residential use and are not ideal for main living areas. AC3 is appropriate for all residential applications including high-traffic areas. AC4 is commercial-grade and an excellent choice for busy households, especially with kids or pets. When in doubt, choose AC3 or AC4.

Thickness Matters

Thicker laminate, typically 10 to 12mm, feels more solid underfoot, absorbs sound better, and handles minor subfloor imperfections more gracefully than thin laminate at 6 to 8mm. For most homes, 10mm is a good minimum.

Underlayment and Moisture Barriers

Underlayment goes beneath the laminate and provides cushioning, sound absorption, and a moisture barrier. Some laminate products come with underlayment pre-attached. For installations over concrete, a moisture barrier is critical. For installations over wood subfloors, standard foam underlayment is typically sufficient. Do not skip the underlayment.

What to Budget For

Laminate flooring in the Kansas City market typically runs to .50 per square foot installed, which includes labor with underlayment, materials, and standard installation. Old floor removal adds approximately .00 per square foot. Subfloor prep and leveling adds approximately bash.75 per square foot if needed. There is typically a minimum job charge of 50.

Maintenance Is Simple

Laminate requires very little maintenance. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that can scratch the surface. Damp-mop with a laminate-specific cleaner when needed. Never use excessive water or steam mops. Wipe up spills promptly. With basic care, quality laminate flooring lasts 15 to 25 years.
