Welcome

Babies and toddlers are curious, fast, and completely unaware of danger. Childproofing goes much further than covering outlets. Here is a room-by-room guide to making your home genuinely safe for little ones at every stage.

Start Before They Are Mobile

The best time to childproof is before your baby is crawling or pulling up to stand. Children hit milestones faster than most parents expect. Go through your entire home while you still have the time and mental bandwidth to be thorough.

Kitchen Safety

Install magnetic child locks on every lower cabinet, especially those holding cleaning products, knives, or heavy cookware. Use back burners on the stovetop when possible and turn pot handles inward. Add an oven lock. Move medications and chemicals to locked upper cabinets. Refrigerators with external dispensers should have child locks activated.

Bathroom Safety

Install a toilet lock. Store all medications in locked or high cabinets. Set your water heater to 120 degrees to prevent scalding. Use a non-slip mat in the tub. Keep razors, scissors, and hair appliances completely out of reach. Consider a door knob cover to prevent unsupervised entry.

Living Room and Family Spaces

Anchor all bookshelves, media consoles, and dressers to the wall with anti-tip furniture straps. Furniture tip-overs injure tens of thousands of children annually. Pad sharp corners on coffee tables and hearths. Use sliding outlet plate covers rather than the plug-in cap style. Secure blind and curtain cords completely out of reach.

Bedrooms

Keep all furniture away from windows. In your own bedroom, lock up medications, firearms, and any tools in secure storage. Use doorstops to protect little fingers from door hinges throughout the home.

Stairs, Garage, and Storage

Install hardware-mounted safety gates at both the top and bottom of every staircase. Pressure-mounted gates are not safe enough for the top of stairs. Keep the garage and basement completely off-limits for young children, with all chemicals and tools in locked storage.

Windows Throughout the Home

Install window stops or guards on any window above the ground floor. Do not rely on screens as a fall barrier. They are not designed to support a child’s weight.
